Shrimp Boil Packets on the BBQ!

Last night we decided we really wanted to try and do our own shrimp boil! Yum right?! BUT instead of doing it the traditional way in a big ol’ pot, we opted for the grill.

I am happy to say it turned out AWESOME. We did it in two separate batches, just so that we could tweak the second batch as it was a learning experience and our first experiment!

Tip Tuesday: Salad Dressing as Marinade

Something that seems to be an arch nemesis of all at home cooks is chicken. It’s boring. Right? Really, it is something that most families eat a few times a week because it is affordable, a good source of protein and its easy in terms of actually cooking it.

It is really difficult to come up with new creative chicken ideas- especially ones that don’t make your chicken dry. In the last 6 months or so, Tyler has been set on eating chicken as much as we can…like…Monday-Thursday. No boy, no. But, with that being said I have incorporated it more. I don’t really know why he wants to eat so much chicken. Gains, or some bologna? I don’t know. But either way, I had to force myself to come up with some new chicken dishes and expand my repertoire.

Tip Tuesday: New Starbucks Drink Option

I like going to Starbucks as much as the next white girl in Ugg boots, but with that being said, I’m not obsessed with it. In fact, I rarely get one of the oh so popular frappacino, machiatto, latte, blah blah.

My drink of choice might sound a bit strange, but trust me, give it a try.

I order a Steamed Milk with Caramel. WHAT?! No she didn’t. Take back her Ugg boots.

Here me out, first of all, the reason I started drinking it was because I used to only go to Starbucks at night and I didn’t want caffeine to keep me up all night. Let’s face it, hot milk is great for going to bed.

The caramel aspect gives it that Starbucks-esque type flavouring, and the steamed milk adds a delicious nutty flavour. So it’s a great option for getting the Starbucks feel, without all the caffeine!

DOUBLE TIP: It is an awesome alternative for pregnant women! Caffeine is not a friend of the soon to be mama, but it is a hard thing to cut back on. So, this is a really good option to give the illusion that you’re still getting your drink from your local Starbucks without all the nonsense that you don’t need!

Good Eats: Avocado Toast

We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day blah blah and yes, it’s true but the reality for me is I am not a breakfast lover!! No really, I’m serious. I would rather eat a steak for breakfast than an omelette.

Now, that being said even though I am not obsessed with breakfast foods, I have been getting a lot better at incorporating breakfast-esque dishes into my morning routine. Avocado toast happens to be one of those quick, easy and really delicious meals that I have constantly been going back to.

Here is a quick version that I made  this morning:

Half of an avocado- sliced (the Hass avocado is the best- they’re ugly brown on the outside and bright green and delicious on the inside, one slice of toasted bread (I used a 12 grain), about 3/4 cup of low fat cottage cheesed with a little drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper and a pinch of red pepper flakes and 1/4 tsp of chopped fresh chives.

Tip Tuesday: Candied Ginger

I am the type of person who takes Advil or Tylenol when I get a paper cut. I really used to take it too much, and started to  rely on it so much that it started to be ineffective.This year I have tried to eliminate the “drugs” from my life as much as possible, and replace them with natural remedies.A lot of the one’s I have found while researching have been just as effective as medicine you can buy at your pharmacy- and way better for you too!One of my favorite medicinal cures is candied ginger. Ginger is so great if you have a sore stomach, it works almost instantaneously. Often times I will put powdered ginger in my tea when I have a sore stomach (or even cramps), but I personally love to take a piece of candied ginger and suck on it for as long as possible.It is a little spicy, but you get used to it very fast…and you can actually feel the ginger soothing your stomach while sucking on it.I now keep candied ginger everywhere (bedroom, kitchen, desk at work) in case I ever have a sore stomach that I just cannot handle!!
